Fuel Storage
In order to be safe, the smaller fuel canisters or the large refueling tank needs to be stored away from the main complex or building. Adding to the safety factor, it is vital that "No Smoking" signs are clearly displayed in the vicinity. Ideally, the fuel tanks should be stored in a safe enclosure which can only be accessible by authorized employees. It is very important for the operator's safety, as well as everyone they work with, that these safety measures are strictly followed.
To be protected from vehicle impact, the fuel enclosure itself has to be protected. This task could use retraining systems such as concrete bumpers. Other retaining methods can be used. It is also important to always have a fire extinguisher nearby at the refueling station. Moreover, anyone who is operating the fueling station must be trained and also must be trained to effectively and safely operate the fire extinguisher. With regards to the fuel aspect, safety is of utmost importance.
Operator Training
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration or OSHA require that everyone who is operating an industrial powered lift truck or forklift is trained properly. This training includes both the hands-on training and the classroom portion. After finishing the training session, the individual has to be tested to be able to show that they understand the training materials. A portion of this training also includes the correct method of the refueling process of the forklift. The training also involves site-specific procedures as well as the precautions involved for the refueling of any unit they could be driving.
Medical Treatment
Material Safety Data Sheet or MSDS should be located inside all facilities where lift trucks are operating. This center would include the MSDSs for all chemicals and solvents that are used on site. This would also cover the propane which is used to refuel the unit, together with the acid in the forklift battery.
The MSDSs sheets are required to be available to all workers all the time. Like for example, if an exposure incident occurs, the person has to be evaluated immediately. If any medical attention is needed, to must be given without any delay. Usually, if you are not sure if medical care is required, as a general rule; have a physician examine the injury if you truly think it is severe. Always better to be safe than sorry.
