Forklift Tank Safety
Amongst the most common kinds of lift trucks on the market is a propane-powered model. The propane is used to fuel these vehicles and it has some properties which need to be considered when working with the fuel tank. It is essential that PPE or also known as Personal Protective Equipment is worn at all times to be safe.
Personal Protective Equipment or PPE
Propane gas is very cold. Very cold in fact that contact to your skin can cause severe burns to occur. Whenever you are exchanging the propane tank or re-fueling, be sure to wear thick gloves and a full face shield or goggles. PPE or Personal Protective Equipment is a requirement to be used on location so as to keep the operator as safe as possible. PPE is a standard workplace requirement for the majority of businesses using this equipment and if the driver does not have the correct items on, such as a hardhat, safety goggles, steel-toe boots et cetera than she or he would be banned from operating the machinery.
Check the Valve
Before connecting the fuel line in the process of exchanging the tank, make sure that the new tanks valve is turned off. This is really important because when you are inserting the fuel line into an open valve, you will release the propane gas. This condition could result in a potentially dangerous condition.
Fire Extinguisher
Having a fire extinguisher on hand when re-fueling is occurring or during the time the tank is being changed out is one more vital safety measure to have implemented. Most companies have fire extinguishers situated near the refueling post. It is better to have one close and not need it, than to require one and not have one nearby. The majority of safety rules require this is set up on location too.
Secure the Tank
Most propane tanks have either a strap or a restraining device to secure the tank to the machinery. Be sure that this device is properly working and used properly so that you can prevent the tank from falling or shifting, because this can also lead to a dangerous situation.
