Forklift Battery Safety
The large industrial sized batteries used to run electric lift trucks should be charged regularly and correctly maintained. Safety procedures must always be followed while connecting the battery to the charger. It is really essential to check fluid levels in the battery.
Personal Protective Equipment - PPE
Eye protection is vital for anyone working with a lift truck battery. Complete protection includes goggles, safety glasses, or a full face shield. The best way to protect skin and clothes from other residue or leaked acid is to wear thick rubber gloves on the hands and an approved apron on the body.
Emergency Eyewash Station
Near the charging area should be an emergency eyewash post. The path to the station must not be blocked and an injured worker should be able to go to the eyewash station from the charging place in 10 seconds without running.
Charger Safety
The charger must be the same amperage as the battery. It must be turned off while the battery is being plugged in.
Open Flames
Open fire are prohibited near a charging area and battery. Do not allow objects like for instance matches or lighters to be utilized while an employee is checking the fluid levels in the battery.
Ventilation
The battery charging place also needs to be well ventilated. The recharging process can cause fumes to be released. These fumes are both explosive and poisonous.
